at the Psyrri Theater
ΟΛΟΚΛΗΡΩΘΗΚΕ
Starting April 18, the Psyrri Theater will present the play “The Sky Is Red in Anagnostaki’s Galaxy,” adapted, directed, and performed by Roula Pateraki.
Following the twin performances in 2018 (Loula Anagnostaki’s “White” and “Red” performances at the Athens Festival), Roula Pateraki once again takes on Loula Anagnostaki’s work. This time, the occasion is the iconic monologue “The Sky Is Scarlet,” which has been performed in the past by many accomplished leading actresses.
The play’s heroine, Sofia Apostolou—a woman of middle-class background and a French teacher—turns to alcohol. Left unemployed and marginalized, she revisits her past, bringing to the surface memories of a life divided between two men, two relationships that defined her as a woman and as a mother: her ideal lover and husband, who has since passed away, and her delinquent, troubled son.
An old passion of hers—going to the theater—fills the emotional void, the absence, and the loss. Sofia Apostolou needs to identify with the magical lives of the actors and their roles.
The play, with its dramatic twists and turns, shifts from intense emotion to humor.
Roula Pateraki directs and performs, attempting to relive Anagnostaki through Anagnostaki, while musician Vaios Prapas joins the adventure with his musical improvisations.
“We would like to thank theater scholar Dio Kangelari for her valuable scholarly contribution to the development of the play’s structure.”
