A monologue—an ironic commentary on the stifling clichés of our lives, the unbearable conventions that undermine our freedom, the oppressive “musts,” and the outdated “supposedly”! Laughter—both hearty and bitter—from an unexpected and extraordinary woman, just like the one next door.
Three women collaborate to present, in 90 minutes, their own contemporary version of M.A.I.R.O.U.L.A.—the one set in 2025!
THE STORY:
A 37-year-old woman takes us on a journey—across the turbulent archipelago of Athens—toward her own Ithaca, with one and only lifeboat: her biting and ironic sense of humor!
She opens the door to her bathroom to the public and shares with them an incredible experience of empathy and escape from the relentless grind of everyday life.
On her white clothesline, she hangs out the dirty laundry of the human race, pins it up with clothespins, and waits for it to dry so we can all gather it up together.
As she confides to us:“…My coffee commits suicide every day on the burner. It swells and bubbles up like a rash inside my coffee pot, and each of its blisters bursts like a dream. And I’m afraid it might spill and I won’t have time to take it off the heat. So I cut my dreams short to make it in time. So they won’t spill. It would be a shame to get burned by a dream…”
The M.A.I.R.O.U.L.A.. was written in 2009 at the request of the National Theater.
This production is suitable for those 16 and older.
