at the Psyrri Theater

Start Date: Tuesday, October 6

Athens Theaters/Stages Network is collaborating for the first time with Olia Lazaridou to present the play “Theophilos Sold” by Samson Raka, directed by Lazaridou herself, at the Psyrri Theater, starting Tuesday, October 6.

Theophilos is played by Haris Charalambous Kazepis. Actress Ariadne Konstantakopoulou appears on stage with him.

The performance ” Theophilos sold has been presented with great success at the School of Fine Arts, at the Fougaro Art Center in Nafplio and at the Old University (History Museum) in Plaka. It is a quick, light and humorous passage from the life of the painter Theophilos Hadjimichael. It is a narrative – in the first person – of the life and work of the great Greek folk painter, with some elements of folk spectacle, a circus flavor and music!

Theophilos’s psychological makeup is very much rooted in childhood, and it is no coincidence that, throughout his life, his best friends were children. He knew how to organize them and would put on outdoor performances with them, featuring plays he wrote himself!

A few words about the performance:

Theophilus’s life is like a fairy tale—a fairy tale that is both captivating and instructive! In it, childlike innocence and sincerity coexist with the seriousness and wisdom of a great teacher. Theophilos, this humble wandering painter, who has been praised by Elytis, Seferis, and so many others, was—in the eyes of the world, which heard him say and do paradoxical things—a madman. They mocked him and made crude jokes at his expense. He faced the world’s scorn, the teasing, and the sarcasm about his difference by painting ceaselessly and letting his work speak for him. He never lost hope, never lost his courage, and never gave up painting!

That was his secret weapon, as he says at one point in the play. His painting is a rare example of boundless creativity!
