at the Piraeus 131 Theater

Start Date: Monday, October 12

“The Roommate,” the subversive play by queer American author and poet Jen Silverman, is an unpredictable adventure about two women living together somewhere in the Midwestern United States.

This is the first time it has been presented in Greece, and it is directed by Vicky Volioti.

On stage (in alphabetical order): Marina Aslanoglou, Gogo Brebou

The case:

“The Roommate,” Robin, comes from the Bronx to share a home with Sharon, who lives in Iowa. Strangers to each other, now alone, with grown children who live far away, they’ll share the same roof and will inevitably have to get to know one another—their quirks, their pasts, and their oddities. And here begins the game of charm, as it always does at the start of a new acquaintance. Funny stories, but also stories involving demons, weaknesses, fears, and desires.

The conservative Sharon will try to understand the rebellious Robin, who doesn’t understand Christ! And yet, at some point, the two of them manage to find common ground.

Different mindsets, different minds, different principles—or no principles at all. The petty-bourgeois and tedious normality is pleasantly disrupted by the anarchic and titillating thrill of the illegal and the transgressive. Yin and yang will work together, and each will take from the other what it lacked; and despite their differences, they will find a unique balance! Everything that came before was, after all, so banal!

I guess it’s time for something completely groundbreaking! Something that speaks to their hearts! Something they’ll really love! Let’s start from the beginning!

“The Roommate” is a powerful, adrenaline-pumping play that explores the redefinition of the self when life has moved on significantly, when the “musts” are few and memories are plentiful.

It is a project for the tomorrow that comes every day! For all those—regardless of gender — who continue to be swept away by the sound of life and build their own world just as they want it, because, if we really think about it, there’s nothing left standing!

If Nietzsche had said, “Don’t exorcise your demons and throw away everything good that’s inside you!” either Robin and Sharon listened to him, or they’re simply following their hearts.
