at the Apothiki Theater

Jean Genet’s iconic play, which brought the author international acclaim, is being presented at the Apothiki Theater, directed by Giorgos Skevas. Starring (in alphabetical order): Amalia Kavali, Angeliki Papathemeli, Alexandra Sakellaropoulou.

The lady is being dressed by her maid. The lady is haughty; the maid is servile. They taunt each other, and the servant slaps the mistress. Suddenly, an alarm clock rings, and the entire scene collapses. It is revealed that the mistress is not a mistress at all, but one of the two maids, who are playing the game of mistress and maid while their mistress is away…

This is how*The Maids*begins; since 1947, when it was first staged in Paris, and up to the present day, it has been translated and performed countless times on stages around the world, demonstrating the play’s enduring relevance.

A masterpiece, characterized by its masterful use of language within a highly poetic form. The shifting of roles, the relationships of power and submission, the struggle for dominance over the other, the class differences that prove insurmountable, eroticism and dependence, create an explosive atmosphere of tension and suspense through the combination of dream and reality, desire and self-punishment, rejection and acceptance of life’s inviolable rule.
