“Dads with Rum,”the legendary modern Greek comedy by Thanasis Papathanasiou and Michalis Reppas, continues with incredible momentum for its fourth year, at the Aliki Theater starting Wednesday, October 8!
Starring: Christos Hatzipanagiotis, Vicky Stavropoulou, Thanasis Efthymiadis, Sofia Vogiatzaki, Antigone Naka, and Konstantina Michael.
But what are these “Dads” anyway?
It is a biting satire, first performed in 1996, that ridicules Greek society. A society that, even today, unfortunately continues to be larger than life, “smaller” in its behavior, greedy, racist, and offensive in all its manifestations.
Of course, a lot has happened since then. A new millennium dawned, and a new reality took hold among us. Upheavals, thwarted plans, countless new social media platforms, redefinitions of life, and a great deal of chaos. The shift in class identity that many people sought began to bring losses instead of gains. Homes were “closed down,” and retail chains suffocated their owners. The non-existent authorities, however, remained just as steadfast—and perhaps even more criminal. The term “crisis of conscience” is not often heard. It has been reduced to simply “crisis.”
The story of the five foolish, hapless, and desperate wretches in the play is, in our day and age, a banal part of everyday life. Roe, Vaska, Panagiotis, Jenny, Christos, and Mrs. Vasso are now characters who belong to the realm of realism, having leaped out of the pages of the play. They are living crimes that we encounter and greet every day, unsuspecting of what they might be hiding “in their kitchens.”
And what are those silly bastards doing at the Aliki Theater?
They serve some wonderful “Rum Dads” with a dash of poison and… whoever meets their end. The four million that Dad—who has now left this vain world—won on the lottery are looking for their heir. Two sons, two daughters-in-law, a neighbor who’s a bright know-it-all, and a nightmarish nurse talk, argue, conspire, and sleep peacefully, weaving a sweet web of mutual destruction.
“Dads with Rum” 2025. Who will be the last one standing to inherit the fortune? That remains to be seen.
