at the Dimitris Horn Theater
*Final Performance: Sunday, April 13, 2025
One of the most talked-about plays of recent years, “Doubt” (Doubt: A Parable) by John Patrick Shanley, premieres on October 21 at the Dimitris Horn Theater (10 Amerikis Street).
Starring: Filareti Komninos, Nikolas Chanakoulas, Christina Christodoulou, Xenia Dania.
The film is directed by Giorgos Papageorgiou.
The play won the Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award in 2005. In 2008, it was adapted into a film starring Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman and received numerous Oscar nominations.
The story:
Sister Aloysius accuses Father Flynn of sexually harassing a 12-year-old Black student at the Catholic school she heads. Father Flynn defends himself and his actions. He claims that his desire is for the Church of God to be open to everyone and for the educational system to become more progressive.
Sister Aloysius respects and upholds tradition; she is disciplined, protective of the students at her school, and extremely conservative. She also detests modern innovations. These principles and convictions guide her thoughts and actions.
The same goes for her deep faith in the Catholic Church, to which she has been faithful for many years now.
What if it turns out someday that her judgment was wrong? What if everything she has believed up until now turns out to be false?
According to author John Patrick Shanley, “The beginning of change is the moment of Doubt. It is that critical moment when I reevaluate and renew my humanity—or become a lie. Doubt requires more fortitude than unyielding certainty, and a greater expenditure of energy; certainty is a point, doubt is perpetual—an exercise in passion. You may ultimately emerge from this work uncertain. You may yearn for certainty. Reject this tendency of yours. We must learn to live amid uncertainty, amid complete and utter ambiguity. There is no final word. There is only silence beneath the clamor of our times.”
