“I wouldn’t go to Gloria’s party even if my life depended on it. Gloria is the office nutcase, and no one wants to hang out with the office nutcase outside the office!”
Starting in October, the brilliant satire by award-winning American playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins will be presented at the Horn Theater every Monday and Tuesday. The play is directed by Emily Louizou.
Another day dawns on my way to the office. What office, though… hell, more like! The workplace battlefield is a “glossy” glam magazine that’s been going downhill for years. Frustrated young people—mostly reporters, assistant editors, magazine staff, and interns—are trying to stay afloat while getting caught up in verbal disputes, gossip, and vulgarities. The concept of teamwork has been nullified; ambition, an insatiable thirst for dominance, and personal advancement are the only goals; camaraderie has been erased from the vocabulary, and exploitation, hypocrisy, the pursuit of publicity, and lies have taken hold and reign supreme.
And then, suddenly, one day, something happens. An unexpected event turns everything upside down.
With a unique and incredibly biting sense of humor, the play highlights how modern, high-pressure working conditions manage to erode the worker’s moral principles, dissolve their personal relationships, and disrupt their inner world.
This is a high-quality satire that balances between comedy and drama and explores relationships, conflicts, and the discontent of workers in a workplace that, while exhausting them more and more each day, fuels their will to survive along with their hidden cannibalistic instincts.
