at Little Horn
COMPLETED
The captivating play by award-winning Irish playwright David Ireland, “The 5th Step,” is being presented at the Mikro Horn Theater, directed by Alexandros Chrysanthopoulos, starting Monday, November 24. It stars Thanos Tokakis and Pantelis Dentakis.
The play explores the relationship between two men—an alcoholic and a former alcoholic—who takes on the role of a mentor, helping the former complete the “12 Steps,” that is, the 12 stages of recovery as defined by Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). At their meetings, they talk about friendships, family, sex, alcohol, spiritual awakenings, God, addictions, and passions until they reach Step 5: “Having admitted our mistakes, we accepted them and confessed them to a Higher Power and to another human being.” How ready are they to take this Step? How ready are they to trust one another and confess their deepest truths?
Luke – Do they talk about God at AA?
James – Yes, for a God as each person understands Him.
Luke – Even so, He is God.
James – A paper coffee cup could be God. Anything!
Lucas – What? How can a paper coffee cup be God??
In *The 5th Step*, author David Ireland creates an allegorical father-son relationship—from birth to death. He discusses guidance, recovery, and sobriety, addressing with humor and biting wit men’s need to constantly reaffirm their masculine identity, the parental care that often morphs into a position of power and control, as well as the roles we play in our lives —such as friend, son, father, dependent, or mentor—rather than facing who we truly are.
