Journey to the Edge of the Night
The “Neapolis” Theater Company is presenting, for the second year in a row due to its success, the play “Change: Method,” based on the book of the same name by Édouard Louis: “From the doomed life of my childhood to a new universe where my own body could find a place.”
From Saturday, December 6, through Sunday, January 4, every Saturday and Sunday for 10 performances only. A play about transformation and liberation from the shackles of fear.
Édouard Louis writes autobiographically, just as he does in his other books. He returns to the past, dissects it, and above all, builds the present. He needs to live in the present and take his own breath of freedom. And he gives us a stirring manifesto. For the emancipation of a gay child, a member of the impoverished working class of the poor, deindustrialized French North, who transcends his circumstances.
And we, too, draw strength from this manifesto with tenderness. From our perspective, we focus on Edouard’s relationship with Elena, through whom—and with whom—he will embark on a journey of transformation that will lead him to the great escape. They belong to different social classes and cultures, yet they will meet and develop a bond that transcends the boundaries of friendship. Love is here. Change, escape, and betrayal, too. Politics is here. The stamp of class. The class barriers. But they will stand together against a world of injustice and oppression. They will seek freedom, paying the price.
Edouard will leave again. He will explore his sexual identity. He will meet his mentor, Didier. And he will embark on his new life.
